NPE TELEVISION SERIES- AN INTRODUCTION

After the Sumo Wrestling, NPE intend to turn their attentions to the following new challenges:

1) ROCK PAPER SCISSORS (RPS) – CANADA.

In the first programme of the series, Colin and Graham travel to Toronto in Canada to compete in the Rock Paper Scissors World Championships. The event, which attracts professional players from around the globe, celebrates the oldest, most culturally diverse and practiced method of conflict solving. Immersing themselves into a world of strategy, gambits and mind games, the guys must first hone their skills guerrilla- style through practicing Street RPS with members of the unsuspecting public. Douglas and Graham Walker, the founders of the World RPS society are on hand to offer much needed guidance and to discuss some of the 27 possible gambits. Armed with their finely honed tactics and psychological tricks, the guys are potentially just a stone’s throw away from becoming world champions.

2) RETRO-RUNNING (BACKWARDS RUNNING) – SWITZERLAND.

Life goes back to front as Graham and Colin head to Switzerland to compete in the world backwards running championships. The guys will have to put in some serious backwards hours at the gym and on the street if they are to compete with the world’s best retro-runners. The long-distance race comprises 7 miles of thigh-grinding Alpine terrain up Switzerland’s Stansehorn mountain. A popular sport in both Italy and Switzerland, competitors regularly wear rear-view mirrors on their foreheads. Will the guys be able to pass themselves off as serious backwards athletes and compete with Europe’s elite? Only time will tell.

3) SAUNA – FINLAND.

Heinola in Finland is home to the World Sauna Championships. Competitors from over 20 countries descend on the Finnish village each year for the week-long event to see who can sit in the sauna the longest. Crowds of over 3000 people watch the championships and betting is a frenzy of activity. The starting temperature is a scorching 110°C (230°F) and rises every 30 seconds as a litre of water is poured on the stove. Competitors must leave the sauna on their own two feet if they are to stand any chance of winning the coveted title. So what is the likelihood of two Irish chancers breaking the Eastern European’s domination of the world’s hottest event? All will be revealed.

4) RICKSHAW RACING – INDIA.

The beautiful terrains of India play host to the Auto Rickshaw World Championships, the world’s first motorized endurance sport featuring the famous three-wheeled vehicle. Competing in a 2000km race from one side of the country to the other, Colin and Graham will have to negotiate monsoon rains, over-powering crowds, misty jungles and uncertain roads in their 10-day cross-country trek. With a top speed of under 30 miles per hour, the race is more a test of mental stamina and endurance than driving ability. However, only by successfully navigating a multitude of challenging waypoints and completing physical and intellectual exercises on route will they stand any chance of being crowned world champions.

5) SHEEPDOG TRIALS – WALES.

Since 1873 Sheepdog Trials have been used as a way of proving the competence of working dogs and the strength of the relationship between a dog and its master. Shepherds and farmers have relied heavily on the sheepdog to control their flocks for generations. There are international Sheepdog Trials held annually throughout the UK and Ireland, but until now these have been the preserve of farmers. Can two totally inexperienced city boys convince the rural community that they have what it takes to compete? Starting from scratch, Colin and Graham will have to find a dog, work out how to train it, find a flock of sheep to practice on and then try to avoid complete disaster at the World Sheepdog Trials in Wales next year.

6) JOUSTING – USA.

A cloud of dust, the thunder of hooves, the clash of sword and shield and the ultimate war machine emerges – a knight and his steed. Kitted out in all the gear, Colin and Graham travel back in time to become medieval knights and take part in the World Jousting Championships which are held in California, USA. Testing every ounce of their nerve, fearless Sir Colin and Sir Graham must first master the art of horse-riding before careering lance-first towards their oncoming enemy. Bedecked in suits of armour, jousting (which may be the hardest of all their challenges) will prove to be an incredible test of courage, skill and strength.

Ideas for a second No Prior Experience series include the world championships in: Wife carrying, tin bath racing, camel racing, beard and moustache growing, pillow fighting, air guitar, lawn mower racing, synchronised swimming, wheel gymnastics, mobile phone throwing, bullfighting and kabaddi.
